Attitudes to Aboriginals
The Europeans attitude to Aboriginals wasn't good. The British's view on the Aboriginals was that they were inferior and uneducated. .When the Europeans originally settled Australia in was inhabited by the aboriginals. They had strong beliefs and connections to the land. Even though the British knew that there was already a civilization living here they still only cared about themselves. 'Terra Nullius' is how they justified kicking the aboriginals off their land and using it for their own personal benefit. 'Terra Nullius' means 'land belonging to no one' therefore the British could occupy it and eventually own it. They believed that because the Aboriginals didn't use the land or show ownership of it in the same ways that they believed in, that it should be theirs instead. The Europeans abused the Aboriginals rights as humans and a race and often treated them like 'primitive natives'. As the early settlers went inland, Aboriginals started to protect their land by trying injure the settlers. But their efforts went unnoticed when the settlers bought in weaponry and more numbers. As a result of the settlers decisions to try and kill the Aboriginals the Aboriginals decided to use guerrilla tactics in a desperate act to save the land they had called home for a long time. Guerrilla tactics is when a small group uses all of its resources including men, women and children in order to defeat an opponent. When someone uses guerrilla tactics they may also use military techniques such as ambushes, raids and sabotages to defeat a greater army. Unfortunately for the Aboriginals their efforts did not work and their race nearly came to extinction. When Australia became a federation, Aboriginals were excluded from voting for a leader. The attitude to Aboriginals didn't change though after the federation of Australia.
