Attitudes to Immigration
The colonies had different laws about immigration but they all shared the same discrimination and racism towards people that weren't the same race as themselves. 5 months after the federation of Australia on the 1st January 1901 the new federal parliament introduced the immigration restriction act also known to many as 'The White Australia policy'. This law stopped many types of immigrants that Australians didn't want living in their country to come to Australia. Australians at the time also feared the Chinese and Mongolians in particular because of their ability to work harder for less money. This might have caused unemployment for Australians. On the gold fields immigrants were often discriminated and considered inferior compared to 'white people'.
